Welcome to the first edition of Barley Times - the newsletter which keeps you informed with the latest news at Barley Bottom - your favourite online homebrew shop!
I recently started stocking 9 gallon firkins which are great for connecting up to a beer engine. Coupled with a check valve and cask breather, they're ideal for the homebrewer to keep beer in tip-top condition whilst serving through a hand pump.
I asked, and 270 people spoke - a recent survey on Jim's Beer Kit forum has revealed which new products people would like to see stocked at Barley Bottom. Here are the top five results:
| More Hop Varieties: | 28% |
| More Yeast Varieties: | 18% |
| All Grain Kits: | 12% |
| Water treatments: | 10% |
| Brewing Equipment | 8% |
As a result, Barley Bottom is now stocking Cascade, Crystal and Bramling Cross and we've just restocked East Kent Goldings. See below for our newest AG kit as we expand this section too - stay tuned for more product related news when it happens.
Also new is Pale Chocolate malt, colour 550 EBC - perfect for adding a touch of flavour without too much colour.
This month sees the introduction of our newest All Grain kit: Old Yella. Carefully crafted as an easy drinking Pale Ale hopped with First Gold and Fuggles.
Read the story behind the name and view the recipe here.
Stats: 5 Gallons, OG 1.045, 30 IBUs, 7.1 SRM
Hops: Goldings tops this month's number one spot for hops, with First Gold coming a close second.
Yeast: Safale 04 is by far your favourite yeast. Nottingham coming a distant second.
Malts: Crystal Malt leads the way in speciality malts. No surprises that Maris Otter is top of the league for base malts.
Other Stats: 77% of you prefer your grains ready crushed and it's a 50/50 split between those that buy in bulk (25kg sacks) and those that buy by the kilo.
